But there's a drastic difference between the two of the NFL's best quarterbacks — namely, the money they're making.
Purdy, the Gilbert native and second-year quarterback for the 49ers, is making roughly $52 million less than Mahomes in base salary this season. That drastic difference in salary is based not only in the fact Purdy is still on his rookie contract, but also where he was taken in the 2022 NFL Draft.
But if Mr. Irrelevant (i.e., the last pick of the draft) leads the 49ers to victory in the big game, there will be a nice bonus waiting for him.
Brock Purdy Super Bowl bonus
Per NFL.com, Purdy — along with the rest of his teammates — stands to make $164,000 in bonus money if the 49ers win the 2024 Super Bowl. If San Francisco falls to the Chiefs, he will make $89,000 in bonus simply for making the big game: over 10% of his base salary for his 2024 contract year.
Purdy signed a four-year, $3.7 million contract with the 49ers after being selected with the last overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. His annual base salary of $934,252 ranks 54th among all NFL quarterbacks, per Over The Cap.
Considering Purdy's production and success since taking over in Week 14 last season as the starting 49ers quarterback — which includes two appearances in the NFC championship came, a Pro Bowl selection, MVP finalist, an NFC championship title and a Super Bowl appearance — he has vastly outplayed that current contract and is well on his way to earning a new contract. However, there are loopholes in the current NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) holding that from happening.
As stated in Article 7 of the NFL's CBA, "a rookie contract for a drafted rookie may not be renegotiated, amended or altered in any way until after the final regular season game of the player’s third contract year." So even if the 49ers wanted to extend Purdy this offseason, regardless of the outcome of the Super Bowl, they wouldn't be able to until after next season to begin those negotiations.
Between his base salary and regular signing bonus payment (aren't NFL contracts neat?), Purdy will earn just more than $1 million dollars in 2024. He'll get another small bump in 2025 and have a chance to hit free agency if the 49ers don't work out a new deal before then.
The contract, per Spotrac, was originally four years at $3.737 million, which averages out to $934,252 per year. Purdy's base salary in 2023 was $870,000, and he'll receive a slight raise in 2024 when that number goes up to $985,000.
According to the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, each eligible player on the Chiefs' roster will receive a check for $164,000 for being on the winning team in the Super Bowl.
April 2 - Brock Purdy went from Mr. Irrelevant to Super Bowl quarterback in less than two years. On Monday, the San Francisco 49ers signal-caller was rewarded financially for his performance in 2023. Purdy received a $739,795 bonus from the NFL's performance-based pay program.
Nonetheless, figures from multiple sources claim that Purdy makes around $500,000 from each of the brand deals. As per Spotrac, Purdy signed a four-year, $3,737,008 contract with the 49ers in 2022. His deal includes a $77,008 signing bonus, and his average salary is $934,252 per year.
Mahomes signed a massive 10-year, $450 million extension in 2020, which pays him an easy to calculate annual average value of $45 million. That money was spread creatively throughout the contract, however, via a contract restructure.
While Tyrone Swoopes won the reigning title of the lowest-paid NFL player in 2021, looking at the low end of league earners isn't as simple. NFL players face different minimum values that depend on their contract and designation as active or inactive players.
Joe Burrow enters the 2024 offseason as the NFL's highest-paid quarterback, making a cool $55 million annually as part of his five-year extension with the Bengals. He's one of five quarterbacks league-wide making over $50 million a season.
Patrick Mahomes Earns $1.25M Contract Bonus with Chiefs' Super Bowl 58 Win vs. 49ers. Patrick Mahomes earned a bit more than just his third Super Bowl Sunday night. His Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime to claim a second consecutive Lombardi Trophy and the fourth in franchise history ...
A good pay raise ranges from 4.5% to 5%, and anything more than that is considered exceptional. Depending on the reasons you cite for a pay raise and the length of time that has passed since your last raise, you could request a raise in the 10% to 20% range.
The Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Burrow leads the list at $55 million, with the Los Angeles Chargers' Justin Herbert second at $52.5 million per year, followed by the Baltimore Ravens' Lamar Jackson at $52 million per year.
As per the league's Collective Bargaining Agreement established in March 2020, NFL players' minimum salary measured up to $660,000 in the 2021 season, which went up from $610,000 in 2020. The minimum salary rose to $705,000 in 2022.
Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to terms on a five-year, $275 million deal that will make Burrow the highest-paid player in NFL history on an annual basis at $55 million per year, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday just as the NFL's 2023 season was kicking off.
